Onyxia's Lair
Onyxia's Lair is the cavernous home of the broodmother Onyxia. This single-boss raid encounter is a rite of passage for many guilds, testing coordination across three challenging phases against the great black dragon. The fight progresses from a ground phase, to an air phase with whelps, and finally to a frantic third phase with added fear effects.
Getting there
- Travel to Dustwallow Marsh. The easiest way is via the flight path at Theramore Isle (Alliance) or Brackenwall Village (Horde).
- From the main road, head south into the large swampy area known as the Wyrmbog, which is filled with elite dragonkin.
- Navigate south through the swamp, bearing slightly west. You are looking for a prominent cliffside.
- The entrance is a cave located directly beneath a massive dragon skeleton perched on the cliff edge.

Before you enter
- ›Craft and equip Onyxia Scale Cloaks to survive her Phase 2 Deep Breath attack.
- ›Equip as much Fire Resistance gear as possible, especially on the main tank.
- ›Bring a full assortment of consumables: Greater Fire Protection Potions, elixirs, food buffs, and bandages.
- ›Understand the boss positioning to avoid being hit by her tail swipe or frontal cleave and breath attacks.
Requirements
- ◆Completion of a long and epic quest chain for your faction, which rewards the Drakefire Amulet key needed to enter.
Kill a number of elite dragonkin in the Burning Steppes to begin the Onyxia attunement chain.
Start: Helendis Riverhorn — Morgan's Vigil, Burning Steppes
Chain: This is the first quest in the Alliance Onyxia attunement chain.
Find the missing Marshal Windsor, who was last seen investigating Blackrock Mountain.
Start: Marshal Maxwell — Morgan's Vigil, Burning Steppes
Chain: Follows the 'The True Masters' breadcrumb quests.
Escort Marshal Windsor safely out of the Blackrock Depths prison.
Start: Marshal Windsor — Blackrock Depths
Chain: The culmination of the search for Windsor inside the prison.

Slay General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire and collect his blood to forge the key to Onyxia's Lair.
Start: Haleh — Mazthoril, Winterspring
Chain: The final step in the Alliance attunement chain.
Kill Highlord Omokk, Overlord Wyrmthalak, and War Master Voone within Lower Blackrock Spire.
Start: Warlord Goretooth — Kargath, Badlands
Chain: This quest line begins after looting 'Blackhand's Command' from Overlord Wyrmthalak.
Seek out the champion Rexxar, who wanders the road in Desolace.
Start: Eitrigg — Orgrimmar
Chain: Follows a meeting with Thrall and Eitrigg in Orgrimmar.
Gather materials to create a disguise: Black Dragonscales, Blackrock Bracers, and a special enchanted amulet.
Start: Myranda the Hag — Western Plaguelands
Chain: Given by Myranda after being sent to her by Rexxar.
Collect the skulls of three powerful dragons: Scryer (Winterspring), Somnus (Swamp of Sorrows), and Axtroz (Wetlands).
Start: Emberstrife — Talon-Futch, Dustwallow Marsh
Chain: A trial given by the dragon Emberstrife while you are disguised.
Slay General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire and collect his blood to prove your worth.
Start: Rexxar — Desolace
Chain: The final major step before receiving your amulet.
Return to Rexxar with the blood of Drakkisath to receive your Drakefire Amulet.

How to beat it
Three phases. Phase 1 (100–65%): tank her on the far wall, sideways to the raid. Phase 2 (65–40%): she flies — everyone ranged kills her, while whelps pour out of the side caves. Phase 3 (40–0%): she lands and fears the whole raid every 30s; hold steady and burn.
⚠ Wipe risk: Deep Breath in Phase 2 — if she turns to face you while airborne, run to her sides. It one-shots anyone in the line.
🛡️ Tank
- ›P1: keep her side-on — tail swipe behind, cleave in front
- ›P2: grab whelps as they spawn and drag them to the raid's AoE
- ›P3: re-establish threat fast after each fear; use any fear immunity or fear protection your class or group has
💚 Healer
- ›P1: steady tank healing; stay out of her front and back
- ›P2: Fireball hits random players — heal fast, spread out
- ›P3: Bellowing Roar fear — stand away from the floor cracks (lava eruptions)
⚔️ DPS
- ›P1: melee only on her flanks, ranged wait for 65%
- ›P2: ranged on Onyxia, melee and AoE on whelps
- ›P3: everyone on the boss; don't pull threat after a fear
